After running the Amsterdam marathon in October 2022, it was again time for another challenge. And because we have special feelings with the magical island of Ibiza, it was clear to me that I had to run a full marathon here. And it wasn’t just a marathon, it was an unforgettable journey full of challenge, beauty and personal growth. For everyone who is thinking about running the Ibiza Marathon, I’d love to share my story, together with some practical tips and insights to get yourself well prepared to make your Ibiza Marathon a succes.

Preparation; 3 Months in advance
When I decided to run the Ibiza Marathon, I knew it wouldn’t just be about the race. The island itself, with its beautiful scenery and vibrant culture, would be a huge part of the experience. Here are some of the preparation steps that were crucial for me:
Training schedule:
It al started with a training schedule to work towards the marathon. Knowing that the date was the 13th of april 2024, I planned my 13 weeks in advance. So the preparation started in January. When I started with the custom made program, I was able to run a 1/2 marathon.
Accomodation:
Knowing that April is already a popular month for visiting Ibiza, i knew i had to book an accomodation quick. I stayed in Es Canar close to Santa Eularia, knowing that the finish was there. This saved me a lot of stress. After the marathon you don’t want to travel a lot anymore!
Climate:
The weather on Ibiza in april can vary but also can be treacherous. So keep that in mind when choosing your outfit. Wear light breathing clothes and be prepared for lots of sun. Don’t forget sunscream and stay hydrated!
Marathon day, 13th of April 2024
The day before I met a lot of new people, mostly Dutch people who were also going to run. Because of the tension, sleeping in a strange bed and being by myself, I didn’t had the best sleeping night of my life. But hey, it was oké and I was all excited for the big day.
The morning of the Ibiza marathon felt magical. I enjoyed a really good breakfast in the morning sun, which was cottage cheese with lots of protein and fruit. The start was at 4 pm, a unique aspect of this race that gives you an energy boost as you cover the first few kilometres.
My goal was to stay under the 4 hours. That was challenging enough, taking in consideration the heat of the day together with the increasing altitude at the first 21 KM of the race.

The Ibiza Marathon Route and my best tip!
Running a marathon on an Island like Ibiza is way different then running one in the city. Please note that most of the time there won’t be as much people shouting and yelling to you as the do in the city. Some would say that’s a positive thing, others can thrive good on some extra encouragement during your run.
Then there is the altitude change on the Ibiza Marathon. Please keep in mind that the first 21 KM are going up, and the second half of your marathon your running towards see level.
The best tip I can give you is try to focus on running a negative split. This means that you will run slower the first 21 KM then you run the second half of your marathon. Try to keep your heart rate low as you run up. This way you will keep your energy and after 21 KM (when you are going to run towards see level) you can accelerate. This worked out super fine for me and this way I was able to run my fastest marathon so far.
Finish on the Boulevard of Santa Eularia
When you arrive at the beach in Es Canar, you know that the finish line will be in reach soon, as you run besides the sea. This will give you the last energy you need to actually finish the marathon.
Running up the boulevard in Santa Eularia is almost indescribable. Everything you worked so hard for the last 4 months will come out. Although you are exhausted, you are so proud and happy that nothing else matters.
I managed to finish in 3 hours and 55 minutes.
Tips for future participants:
Plan your trip wisely: Combine the marathon with a holiday. Ibiza has so much more to offer than just the marathon. Make sure you don’t fly back the next day, because you will need some days to recover. And were to do this better then on Ibiza.
Hydration: Bring your own water bottle or rely on the water stations, which are well-distributed.
Enjoy: Don’t forget to look around you and enjoy the surroundings while running. It’s a unique opportunity to experience the island in a special way.
